An AI-powered strategy that matched global HQ messaging with Singaporean market needs — and showed why brands that fail to localise lose engagement. SOMIN paired competitor ad intelligence with GWI’s behavioural database so Mothercare Singapore’s team could stop guessing and start targeting the tensions, personas, and channels that actually move Singaporean parents.
A SOMIN brand case study · Singapore · Baby & parenting retail · Powered by GWI behavioural data
Mothercare is a global baby-and-parenting retail brand. Its Singapore business — marking its 40th year in the market — runs its own always-on paid social programme across Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, while every campaign still has to stay on-brand with messaging set by global HQ.
Mothercare Singapore’s marketing team had global brand direction, but no systematic read of the local market underneath it. Even with clear direction from HQ, the local team was often guessing at what content would actually work with Singaporean parents.
Traditional demographics explain who a buyer is; psychographics explain why they buy. SOMIN built Mothercare’s strategy on customer psychographics and content preference, in two connected steps.
Identify precisely how competitors are winning over your audience, tracked across every ad platform the category runs on.
Transform personas instantly into content ideas grounded in local population interests, habits, and online consumption behaviour — powered by the GWI market research database.
SOMONITOR benchmarked Mothercare’s content against a field of Singapore baby-and-parenting retailers — including Baby Kingdom, Babyland, Motherswork, Cotton On Kids, Mummy’s Market, First Few Years, Hatchery Cribs, Kiddy Palace, Pramfox, and Pupsik — and grouped the category’s content into five recurring themes. Two more, creating safe and comfortable spaces for babies and addressing baby-care concerns directly, showed up consistently but carried less volume. Three carried enough signal to quantify with SOMONITOR’s post-to-engagement ratio — revealing which themes were the most efficient, not just the loudest.
~39 engagements per post — sleep, feeding, self-doubt, and the exhaustion no one prepared them for.
~23 engagements per post — parents actively hunting deals, discounts, and trustworthy quality.
~7 engagements per post — gifting content that’s affordable, meaningful, and rare in the category.
GWI’s behavioural data shows mothers in Singapore are more influenced by trust and community validation than the average Singaporean consumer. They’re discerning buyers who look for reassurance before they spend — peer opinions, reviews, and expert endorsement outweigh a brand simply announcing itself. Two channels stand out furthest above the Singapore-average baseline: endorsements by celebrities or influencers (index 147.3) and recommendations or comments on social media (index 131.0). Brands earn this audience through authentic storytelling and community engagement, not transactional messaging.

For the largest segment — Parenting-Focused Workers, 53.9% of the market — that data became ready-to-run ad creative, not another slide:
With SOMIN in place, Mothercare Singapore’s marketing team reclaimed more than 25 hours a week previously lost to manual content research and HQ-to-local guesswork — time that went back into running the campaigns the data actually supported, instead of hunting for them.
Without SOMIN, segmentation of expecting mothers’ needs, engagement patterns, and persona profiling would not be as comprehensive.
— Ms. Xueting Lin, Head of Marketing at Mothercare
Global direction isn’t a local strategy. Mothercare’s HQ messaging was sound, but without a market-specific data read, local teams were left guessing which of it would actually land with Singaporean parents — and guesswork is what SOMIN replaced.
Trust outperforms broadcast in this market. Singaporean mothers over-index on peer recommendations, social endorsement, and influencer trust far more than on traditional ads — the brands that earn credibility beat the brands that just announce themselves.
The same data that saves research time also builds the creative. The persona work behind the 80% time saving didn’t stop at a slide — it produced specific, ready-to-run ad concepts for Mothercare’s single largest segment, Parenting-Focused Workers.
